Young Christian Climate Network (YCCN) Relay to COP26 passes through Hucknall this week.

In November, world leaders will meet in Glasgow for important climate negotiations. A group of Christians (YCCN) who are very concerned about Climate Change and Climate Justice for all, are walking in a relay from Cornwall to Glasgow, to urge world leaders to make decisions which protect people, not bank balances, and give the message that no country should be pushed further into debt by climate change.

On Thursday 2 September, the relay reaches St Mary Magdalene’s Church, where walkers will be welcomed at around 5pm. They will set off from church on the next stage of the relay towards Huthwaite on Friday morning.

Please look out for the walkers and encourage them as they ‘Rise To The Moment’!
The post Young Christian Climate Network (YCCN) Relay to COP26 passes through Hucknall first appeared on St Mary Magdalene Church Hucknall.

For those who aren’t able to visit church, or who don’t yet feel confident enough to visit, here’s a very quick video of the beautiful community Christmas wreaths which are displayed along almost the entire length of the marketplace side of our churchyard.

Don’t they look fabulous!

The wreaths replace the Christmas trees which traditionally grace St Mary Magdalene Church during Advent, but which in line with current Covid-19 restrictions are this year missing.

Thank you to all contributed
The post StMM & StJE Christmas Wreaths 2020 first appeared on St Mary Magdalene Church Hucknall.

We can be there for our neighbours when they are most in need. Our neighbours may not live next door or on the same street or even in the same country but they are still our neighbours. Most of us know and support causes who need practical donations yet we rarely mention this because we may feel we already ask a lot from one another.

Our recent Blanket Drive, working alongside NG Solidarity, was a huge success and has already made a difference in the lives of so many refugees, it was a simple appeal where we were simply passing on items we no longer needed, items that were in our cupboards and drawers. That is why I launched the When I Needed a Neighbour appeal. Sometimes you may have spare items in your cupboards or your can afford to buy an extra tin of beans for a food appeal or some toiletries for a homeless person. It’s help like this that will go on to make a big difference in the lives of others.

The When I needed a Neighbour appeal is a chance to make a difference through prayer and practical donations and enable us all to be educated on causes and issues that we may not otherwise be aware of. Each appeal runs for one calendar month and our first appeal began in April with a request for donations of bras on behalf of The Purple Teardrop Campaign which is a Soroptimist International initiative.

The Purple Teardrop Campaign aims to promote human rights, particularly focussing on the infringement of human rights suffered by the victims of people trafficking and supports those in danger. Many women and girls fall prey to traffickers and find themselves caught up in prostitution or domestic servitude in countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya and Mauritius.

All bras collected will be sent to a central collection point in Poole, Dorset, from where they will be shipped in quantity to Africa. The campaign has sponsored women so they have sewing machines which has enabled them to set up their own businesses. With the continued support of the campaign the women are able to restructure the donated bras so they can be sold locally. Hopefully this way the women become more financially independent, more empowered and save themselves from being trafficked.

If you can donate, this initiative requires new or gently used bras only, in any size please, but no ‘first bras’. Please leave any donations, bagged and placed in the labelled box provided in the old vestry.

If you are unable to donate you can still help by including this cause and all trafficked people in your prayers and don’t forget to have a look at our display at the back of church for more information too.

So far this month over 60 bras have been donated which is an amazing amount. A new appeal will continue in June and then alternative months after that. Please keep this important mission in your prayers and keep on checking the website for updates and new appeals.

If you require any further information or would like to nominate an appeal please contact me, Sarah Wheatley at sarahw.who@gmail.com
The post When I Needed a Neighbour Appeal first appeared on St Mary Magdalene Church Hucknall.

They seem to run from one dangerous place fearing for their lives and looking for safety and often end up in another place where they have nothing. Many slip through the system, living on the streets or in the cold, harsh conditions of what was once The Jungle in Calais, frightened and alone. Often all we can do is pray and hope that things will change.

A local charity called NG Solidarity for Refugees organised a Blanket Drive to collect as many blankets and sleeping bags for refugees living in dire conditions in Paris and Calais. St Mary Magdalene’s Church offered to be a local drop off point for the collection and we also got in touch with the congregations of St Peter and Paul’s and St John the Evangelist in Hucknall too. We only had a week to collect donations and we prayed and hoped that we would get 5 or 6 blankets, we believed that’s all it would take to make a difference. We weren’t at all prepared for what greeted us on Saturday 4th March when we went to collect the donations.

Between the three churches and from other donors we delivered over 80 blankets and sleeping bags to the NG Solidarity for Refugees drop off point in Hyson Green. They only just fitted into the car! Over 500 blankets and sleeping bags were donated to the appeal from across Nottingham. We were totally overwhelmed by such an amazing response and we thank God for the generosity of the wonderful people in Hucknall, all of whom will have made a difference in the lives of so many vulnerable people.
